As the connection with one another has deteriorated more and more, as economic gain and power have accelerated, as the industrial revolution has continued and continued, as the “speed” of life and the urgency to produce has accelerated, our connections to community and to one another (as well as to other species and to Mother Earth) have deteriorated. We have, over the past century especially, moved with greater frequency, no longer having the “roots” in community that we once might have had.

As technology “advances” have progressed, we have moved from having a finite number of intimate personal in-person friends to having “virtual” friends numbering in the hundreds, with whom we perhaps share a post now and then. We text rather than talk to people. Humans can bully and “other” one another in more ways than ever before, not even meeting face-to-face with the people being bullied. While technology and virtual connection has offered a benefits during Covid, there is overall deterioration of intimate connection and a lessened sense of community.
